Re: 1984 Elite Historical Research

I was writing occasionally for PCW and other computer mags in that era, I'm pretty sure I never saw anything I wrote appear in less than three months. The games mags were given previews before games were ready for market - for example, I saw Wing Commander 2 at the developer's offices while it was s...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

DTT Planet Express for ships, Oh yeah, that one was fun. There's an "Andromeda" from ... I've forgotten the SF series. I learned to not-attack those, but it'll be interesting to find out what they're like to fly, once I've completed a run round the galaxies and finished the current set of mission, ...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

1) What is your highest rank in Oolite? - Elite 2) how long have you been Ooliting for? - I think I started playing Elite Oolite circa 2012, since I joined the forums in 2013. However, I've played Elite prior to that since the 1980s, starting with the PC version, and a couple of times on BBC Micro b...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Right, since nobody gave a fifth answer, but Cholmondely spotted that one of the unlikely presidents was Ayn Rand, Cholmondely is declared the winner of this round . The five examples I gave were as follows: A Russian-born writer and philosopher, she becomes president of a libertarian America. (I've...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Anyone want to post a complete answer before I let Cholmondely have this? But I don't want Ayn Rand as President! Far rather George Santayana, Eric Voegelin or Leo Strauss. If you can point me at an SF work that has any of them it would be fine with me. There is one with Ayn Rand... OK, let's add a...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

OK, let's try a few clues - and just say that there are some VERY strange ones out there, I'm really surprised none of them have come up: A Russian-born writer and philosopher, she becomes president of a libertarian America. Would this be Ayn Rand, by any chance? It would indeed. But we need more.....

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

OK, I think I can accept this one - not because theocracies are especially unlikely, but because the power grab here is so blatant that even the US electorate would probably notice sooner or later...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

But is Leonidas actually unlikely? I did say "The candidate must be unlikely for some reason; a fictional president who is otherwise unremarkable or unknown won't be accepted." OK then. Travel, in your mind, to a future Earth of puissant technology, including a time machine with ... side effects. W...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

let's have five unlikely science-fictional candidates / incumbents for the US presidency or a successor state (such as combined USA and Canada). Coming in on the Alderson Drive, I'll suggest Emperor Leonidas I of Sparta, first of the line in the First Empire of Man in Jerry Pournelle's Future Histo...

There's President John Henry Eden, from Fallout 3
I for one welcome the USA's new robotic overlord. That's number 3 - two to go!

And for the Luthor fans, here's one of his presidential debates:

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Lex Luthor became President as far back as 2000, I believe … He did indeed. President Alexander Joseph Luthor - eventually impeached for the use of the illegal supersteroid Venom, the theft and use of an Apokyliptian Battle Suit, and the attempted murder of Superman and Batman. Funnily enough that ...
