Of course, nobody prevents you to either "eyeball" the map and set your next jump to your intended system (according with your "long range" intention), or use (say) a pen & paper (or notepad(++) ) approach to eyeball/write it down/follow the jumps one by one. Multiple examples of the same author allowed (but not the same "universe").

does it have to be only online books/stories or can it be physical books to? Books (any type) qualify. It was the "written word" I was trying to capture. The original Wing Commander game came with some nice background fluff in the box, and it spawned a number of published novels, but I haven't read...
