Species: Lobstoids, Amphiboids, Reptiles etc.

Post by Cholmondely »

Several months ago, waltzing around this BB (as one does) I came across a discussion of a new trade system for Oolite which would involve the various species. I distinctly recall a rather jolly chart (coloured, I think) showing how each species would buy certain commodities and sell others (avians would pay over the odds for gems, I recall).

I'd rather like to link it to the new Economics page on our wiki. Does anybody know where it is? Or who wrote it?

I've looked through several years of the Oolite: Discussion, Oolite: Expansion Pack & Oolite-Development Suggestion Box threads to no avail. I also tried Redspear's posts on the strength of his New Lasers OXP which does something similar for laser models & amphibians.

There is now a new Species page on our Wiki: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Species

I'd greatly appreciate some criticism/suggestions for improvement!

Meanwhile:

1) are humanoids only in Oolite, or were there humanoid worlds in Classic Elite too? All versions - or just the 16 bit ones?

2) is there anywhere I can point oxp writers to as regards coding for the various species? (other than New Lasers)?

3) are there any pictures anywhere of Thargoids or Oresrians? Or humanoids?

4) Do the Oresrians come from the rodent-dominated communist system in System/Galaxy 1 - cursed by a dreadful civil war? None of the other systems in the 8 have an insect-dominated system with a similar name.

Probably not, but we do seem to have pics from related insectoid species within Galcop.

Goodness! Where did that come from? I've yet to see anything like it.

That's from a test OXP I had made some years ago when overlays were introduced in the UI. This one just scans the inhabitants description and if it finds the string "insect", it displays the insect overlay. Found here in case anyone is interested (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 just in case).

Righty-ho! Bugs only! And only Bugs!

Is this a morbid manifestation of the mentality of a computer programmer, by any chance?

Will this happen to me too if I keep on tweaking ... will I end up giving my ever-suffering Araminta an attack of the galloping heeby-jeebies?

Can I add the link to the new Species page & the Guide to unlisted OXPs page in the wiki?

Now that you mention it, I guess it is indeed. At least a subconscious one.

Without any shadow of doubt, yes.

Sure, go ahead.

Didn’t the NES version of Elite have pictures of species? Or only of Commander Jameson?

Just seen it here: https://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Elite/nes.html.

Saw no bugs. A thargoid ship but no thargoids. No Oresrians. Not even Commander Jameson - just our very own

Captain Solo!
But, I did note that one can refuel part of the fuel tank rather than the all-or-none approach of Oolite.

There is a YouTube video of actual gameplay on NES where you can see your commander's picture. Alas, no other species, but pictures of planets (around minute 11:00) and even cities! Also noteworthy: different goods for trading. Slaves on NES are robot slaves, plus some other changes. This dodges a lot of the discussions we had here on the BB

I had no idea how sophisticated some of the post BBC versions had been. Thank you!

PS: Could not help but notice that Captain Solo was everywhere in this version too!

Does this Jameson chappy really exist? Or is he just some sort of literary fiction?
