[RELEASE] Povray Planets 1.0

Post by submersible » Sun Feb 05, 2012 12:40 am

Povray Planets aims to provide a high resolution texture for every planet in each galaxy - generated/rendered based on seed values in the spirit of Elite/Oolite.

This OXP is split such that the bulk of the scripting is provided by the base OXP , with the textures provided separately via Povray_Planets_GalaxyX_Textures. The aim of this is to allow modifications to behaviour and bugfixes to be released without the burden of another large download.
The Povray Planets base OXP is no longer recommended , indeed it is a terrible compatibility hack which needs a lot of work. The galaxy textures work by themselves , provided no other OXP attempts to override main planet textures using javascript.

All textures are provided as cube maps 512x3072.

Downloads
All 8 Galaxies and base OXP on Google drive Don't be put off if you see this screen (the google .zip preview won't preview files this large), they can still be downloaded from the link in bottom-right as shown.

Contributions
Software instrumental in the production of this OXP
  • POVRAY used for rendering and most of the procedural texturing
  • vic2d used to generate additional turbulence
  • perl scripting
Helpful advice
  • Smivs
  • Cmdr Cheyd
  • pagroove
  • many others whom I have shamefully forgotten

Guidance for google drive
Edit: November 2012.
The last 4 galaxies were generously rendered and contributed by 'ecraven' - many thanks.
Edit: November 21 2012
Edit: December 3 2012

Just downloaded them and made the jump to G4. I was hanging around in G3 for to long anyway.

They are totally Beautiful! My frame rate is hardly changed too, so that's a bonus.

Wow, great looking textures! I moved its entry from the [wiki]OXP List[/wiki]'s WIP section to the normal one.

Quoting myself here - slightly rude. Several kind souls have volunteered CPU to complete some more galaxies. Could any other of the 20 lucky downloaders of galaxy 4 provide feedback ?

Thank you.

Just voted for G8 as this is where I currently am in the game...

Oh, and if you can use CPU power from a Mac then PM me.

Beautiful - suddenly the planets have a much grander sense of scale!

Great looking textures submersible, good to see every planet with it's own unique texture. Looking forward to galaxy 2

Would these be useful for anything?
Tropical
Fiery

Thank you. Those textures are great inspiration.. it's on my list to build some more variety into the different planet types. Icy/Arctic planets are missing - as are Fiery or volcanic ones. About 45% of each galaxy is 'Continental' which sort of covers Tropical , though that particular one you have there is very nice. Was that hand painted?

That one was produced by merging a couple of textures using different layer blending options; it was quite a while ago so I can't remember the exact details.

Right, time to download galaxy two...

Do you have these available at some higher resolutions - they'd make a beautiful screen saver.

Of course - these screenshots are just cropped from the ingame experience .. most of them are probably 1450x900 with the HUD switched off. I'll upload some soon, however - I encourage you to download , explore and play galactic photographer yourself :)
