Release: Harder Hermits

Post by UK_Eliter »

I have uploaded to the Oolite repository my little 'Harder Hermits' expansion pack. It toughens up some rock hermits - or, toughens them further (but not stupidly so) if some other pack already makes them harder. Indeed it is best used in conjunction with Spara's 'Spicy Hermits'. My expansion pack adds a surprise or too. There might be some bugs; I was not able to test much.

There was a bit of discussion of the project in this thread.

I suppose I should add a nice picture here of a hermit in, er, action . .

Thanks, Cholmondely! That is good of you! Here is some description that will do for now.

REQUIREMENTS

• This expansion pack requires Oolite version *1.82* or above.

PURPOSE

This expansion packs toughens up some rock hermits - or, toughens them *further* if some other pack already makes them harder.

RECOMMENDED OTHER EXPANSION PACKS

• This expansion pack is compatible with, and is best used with, 'Spicy Hermits' by Spara.

• Also, to add more types of defence ships for the hermits, install, in addition to HarderHermits, these OXPs of mine:
- Super Sidewinder
- Fer-de-Lance 3G

Wiki page is here: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Harder_Hermits_OXP

If you need help bunging in a screen shot, bug me!

A tad more description would be nice! You also need to decide what the gubbins at the bottom should be - I guessed Orange and level 3 and sprinkled around '?'s for the rest!

Thank you very much!

I have learned how to edit the page.

I think that the 'orange' / 'level 3' for the difficult rating (or whatever we should call it) is appropriate. However: that the colour rating correlates with the level does not seem to me to be made entirely clear. Also, I am afraid that the gauges - cpu etc. - read ambiguously: does an almost fully blue bar represent a low value (actually, it does) or a high one?

Would probably make more sense if we were lobstoids or felines!

Is it compatible with PHKB's Hermitage OXP?

Good question. I think I managed to fail to notice the existence of that OXP. So: I don't know. I'll investigate and report back here, but it might take new a few days.

I've had a look at what Harder Hermits does, and from my understanding there will be zero impact on a Hermitage. In fact, code in the Hermitage OXP (well, the unreleased new version anyway), will pretty much negate the effect of this one. But they aren't incompatible in any way.

'will pretty much negate [. . .] But they aren't incompatible in any way'. So, negate in what sense, please?

This oxp is trying to bump up the max energy of the RH. However, if the RH is a player-owned hermitage, then I have routines running constantly that are checking what the max energy should be based on the installed equipment and resetting it. So Harder Hermits might bump up the energy, but Hermitage would override it almost immediately. Again this would only apply to a Player-owned RH.

Right. That interaction seems inefficient. If you could give me a hint or two on how to detect which hermits your OXP will take control over, then I can adjust my OXP to leave those hermits alone.

Player-owned rock hermitages? That sounds interesting.
Why would a player own a hermitage? So far I thought Oolite is all about flying a ship...
