The Atlas of the
Dragon continent
INTRODUCTION
Trollworld received its name at the dawn of time, when trolls were the only sentient creatures upon the whole of the world. The other intelligent kindreds would arrive later from off world, or due to magical tampering, to displace the trolls.
Although astronomy is a little-developed science on Trollworld, the most accomplished stargazers among the race of trolls have accumulated a large store of knowledge. Although this knowledge is known to only a small handful of scholars, I have compiled it here.
Trollworld is a typical planet, despite being somewhat large and dense. The planet has a circumference of 30,000 miles. It has a day of standard length due to a rapid speed of rotation that also allows for normal gravity. The Khazan Calendar has 400 days and the hours are named, rather than numbered. The names of the hours sometimes vary according to the local wildlife. These differences only extend to the Dragon Continent’s three Faunal Regions: the Western Temperate, Central Savannah, and Eastern Jungle.
The planet’s size does not affect the climate of Trollworld, except to make the climatic zones larger. The fact that Trollworld is somewhat far from its sun makes it cool and more temperate, even closer to the equator.
Two moons orbit Trollworld. The first casts a pale white light and has a 33-day Synodic cycle (from one new moon until the next). It spends 4 days in each of its 8 incarnations (waxing and then waning new, crescent, gibbous and full). The white moon divides the calendar year into 12 "Moons," or Synods. The second moon is crimson-coloured and noticeably smaller and faster. It has a mere 21-day cycle comprised of 3 days apiece.
The Wizards’ Guild has divided Trollworld into 24 time zones. Each is 1,250 miles wide at the equator, but become increasingly narrower as one travels toward either pole of the planet. The equator of Trollworld is located precisely at the Dragon's Larynx.
The Unicorn Continent is the large landmass in the Eastern Hemisphere and the Eagle Continent is Southeast of there. There really isn't much traffic between continents. Little is actually know of the Unicorn continent specifically except that Khara Khang once ruled it as an immortal wizard king. He believed that the "good" kindreds could live alongside the "monster" kin. He may have come from the Unicorn himself, but there is nothing to confirm this. It can only be assumed that his experiences there have shaped his decisions as Lerotra’hh’s personal advisor.
The dwarves rule an island kingdom south of the Dragon’s Chin and West of its Breast. The island is several hundred miles long and averages half as wide. It is thinnest in the middle and both ends taper towards the centre.
There is an immense amount of Trollworld left undiscovered. This is even true of the southern part of the world, even if there is only a big South Pole and a lot of ocean. The northern half of the world is entirely unexplored.
TROLLS
There are many varieties of troll and each type looks somewhat similar to the last. Forest, hill and mountain trolls are especially similar to hill trolls; sea trolls are less so. Below is a description of an elder troll, a pureblooded descendant of Trollworlds original masters. Elder trolls wield a limited command of the element of earth.
Hill trolls are between twelve and fifteen feet tall when fully-grown and can easily weigh a ton or more. They are humanoids with rough-hewn rectangular bodies. Their bodies are layered in masses of bulging, stony muscles covered in rocky flesh. Trolls have somewhat simian heads, and massive, protruding jaws with huge semi-crystalline tusks. Every troll has two nostrils in the centre of his face, but lacks a nose. Their eyes are deep-set and overshadowed by the bony ridge that forms an uncleft brow. Their foreheads slope upward for more than a foot. Trolls are mottled in dark shades of grey, black, brown and other earth tones. Small traces of scum, lichen and moss cling to their backs. Troll hands are like great paws with only three rough-hewn digits each and their feet are somewhat flat like slabs supporting legs. Instead of toes they have a simple wide jointed ridge at the ends of their feet. Their blood is viscous, highly acidic and has an appearance not unlike lava or boiling mud. Troll speech sounds like the deep rumble and grinding of stone.
GEOGRAPHY
The Dragon Continent is broken up into 6 Time Zones. The Empire of Khazan is in the very western zone and Khazan Standard Time is the sole time zone of the empire. The large Eastern Empire is also a single time zone. Time zones, it must be noted, are only a necessary concern for very powerful wizards dealing with rapid communication or transportation. The vast majority of the people on Trollworld would find the concept baffling.
The Dragon Continent has a few notable political divisions. Our Kingdom is the Empire of Khazan. It controls the west from the coast as far inland as the back of the Dragon’s Neck and Elbow (over 1,800 miles). East of the southern half of the Empire of Khazan is the region dominated by the "good" kindreds. Here along the Dragon’s Belly stretch a huddled assortment of kingdoms. The largest of these is Kaball. South of the Dragon’s Foreclaws is an archipelago named the Maritime Confederacy. The confederacy is a stopping point for travel between Khazan and Kaball. Lizard men from islands due north of the continent’s central coastline control the north coast and inland as far south as 200 miles south of the equator. In the Far East, and travelling south, they may have penetrated up to 600 miles inland from the Dragon’s Back. The Naga kingdom is in the centre of the continent, south of the lizard men. The vast Eastern Empire dominates the Southwest coast and stretches inland for roughly 1,000 miles north-south and 3,000 miles east-west.
